The peroneus muscle group, known for its role in preventing ankle sprains, is actually divided into two muscles: peroneus longus and peroneus brevis. The peroneus longus prevents flat feet, and the peroneus brevis increases the stability of the foot and ankle. The peroneal muscles can lead to separate problems such as stress fractures due to decreased stability in the foot and ankle. However, until now, the peroneus longus and brevis muscles were often lumped together as the peroneus muscle group, so separate exercises for each muscle were not considered.

This time, a research group at Hiroshima University performed a peroneus longus exercise, in which the ankle is twisted outward, and a peroneus brevis exercise, in which the toes are turned outward, on separate days. , By confirming the effect, we examined whether it is possible to perform exercises that separate the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis muscles.

As a result, the cross-sectional area of the peroneus longus muscle increased after the ``rolling over'' exercise, and the muscle strength decreased after the ``abduction'' exercise. The increase in muscle cross-sectional area immediately after exercise is due to temporary muscle swelling, and is thought to indicate future improvements in muscle mass and strength.Additionally, the temporary decrease in muscle strength is due to post-exercise fatigue, and is also a change that indicates future increases in muscle mass and strength.

This study suggests that split-muscle exercise is possible, as these changes occurred separately in the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis with split-muscle exercise. In the future, we will confirm whether long-term peroneus longus and peroneus brevis exercises are also effective as an exercise method that separates each muscle, and will be more effective for foot and ankle injuries. It is hoped that this will lead to the establishment of treatment and preventive approaches.
