On Wednesday, December 2023, 12, Tokyo Keizai University will hold an academic lecture titled "Let's talk about Minamata." We will invite Irene Mioko Smith, who has been involved in the Minamata disease issue since the 6s, to talk with the participants about Minamata disease as a pollution problem.
``Let's talk about Minamata'' will screen the movie ``MINAMATA'' (starring Johnny Depp, 2020), in which Irene is also depicted as one of the main characters.Afterwards, Irene will give a lecture and discuss the relationship between movies and the Minamata disease issue with the participants.
The purpose of this project is to foster and increase environmental awareness among participants through discussions with Irene.Minamata disease, which occurred more than half a century ago, is becoming a distant past in today's society, where calls are being made to declare a climate crisis or a state of climate emergency. However, Masazumi Harada, a doctor who continued to be involved in the Minamata disease issue, says, ``Minamata disease is a mirror that reflects the world.''By learning about, studying, and discussing Minamata disease, which is the origin of pollution and environmental problems, each participant will have an opportunity to think about the SDGs, which are current and future social issues.
You can participate in either the first part of the movie or the second part of the lecture.Participation is free (children under 6 years old are not admitted).Pre-registration is required, and those wishing to participate must apply from the Tokyo Keizai University official website, and the application period is until December 12th (Monday).
