The top ability that high school students think they will need in the future is "independence." Recruit and the National High School PTA Federation conducted a nationwide survey of second-year high school students and their parents, and the following results were found. Goichi Akado, editor-in-chief of Recruit's Career Guidance, analyzes that ``exploratory learning, in which students search for and solve problems while thinking about their own ideals and way of life, is becoming increasingly important.''

According to Recruit, the survey targeted second-year high school students and their parents at 7 schools in seven prefectures: Hokkaido, Tokyo, Akita, Gunma, Fukui, Shizuoka, Nara, Tokushima, and Miyazaki. Valid responses were received from 27 high school students and 2 parents between September and October 2023.

83.0% of parents answered yes to discussions about career paths, and 64.4% of high school students talked to their parents about ``specific career paths after graduating from high school.'' Next are "future occupation" and "future dreams," both of which exceeded 50%.

When it comes to the ability that high school students think will be needed in the future, ``independence'' is the top choice at 51.5%. In contrast, only 25.2% of high school students thought they had a sense of independence, indicating a large gap. 31.2% of parents feel the need for inquiry learning.

Regarding the impact that technological innovations such as AI will have on future occupations, 61.2% of high school students and 53.2% of their parents answered that they had "expectations". On the other hand, some are concerned that the range of career choices will be narrowed due to the development of AI.
