The amount of research funds received by public and private universities nationwide has increased by 2022% from the previous year as of the end of fiscal 6.8, according to a summary by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Both the amount received from private companies and the amount received through joint research has increased from the previous year.
The survey asked public and private universities, colleges of technology, and interuniversity research institutes across the country about their achievements in joint research, contract research, clinical trials, and intellectual property rights as of the end of 2022, and collected valid responses from 1,052 institutions. The figures were compiled by the ministry.
According to the report, the amount of research funding received through joint research, contract research, clinical trials, intellectual property, etc. was 4,390 billion yen. This was an increase of 281 billion yen (6.8%) compared to the previous year. Of this amount, the amount received from private companies was 1,381 billion yen, an increase of 104 billion yen (8.1%) over the previous year.
Of the amount received from private companies, approximately 7%, or 973 billion yen, was for joint research, an increase of 80 billion yen (9.0%) over the previous year. The amount received for joint research exceeding 1 million yen per project was 1,000 billion yen, an increase of 558 billion yen (54%) from the previous year. The average amount received per joint research project was 10.6 yen.
The amount received for intellectual property rights such as patent rights was 65 billion yen. This was an increase of 1,000 million yen from the previous year. Of this amount, the amount received from patent rights accounted for 4 billion yen, approximately 2,000% of intellectual property rights income.
