From December 2019, 12, Saitama Institute of Technology has started a demonstration experiment on public roads toward the introduction of automatic driving of school buses. It runs about 23km on the public road connecting the Saitama Institute of Technology campus in Fukaya City, Saitama Prefecture, and the nearest station, Okabe Station on the JR Takasaki Line. For full-scale operation after 1.6, we will run irregularly as a temporary flight of the school bus and repeat experiments.

Currently, autonomous driving efforts are being carried out all over the country, but this is the first time that a private university school bus for students and faculty members will drive on public roads where general vehicles run.Although a professional bus driver is on board to ensure safety, the steering wheel and accelerator / brake are level 40 automatically controlled by AI, and the vehicle travels at the legal speed (XNUMXkm / h).

A display is installed inside the bus, and various information is displayed so that the results of real-time analysis of image data by the camera and the mechanism of automatic control by AI can be understood. The university has been strengthening the development of AI human resources, such as establishing an AI major in the Department of Information Systems, Faculty of Engineering from April 2019, and through these efforts, it is possible to learn AI experientially while commuting to school.

The "Autonomous Driving Technology Development Center" established by Saitama Institute of Technology in April 2019 will focus on the development of welfare vehicles with automatic driving functions, research on autonomous driving technology utilizing advanced AI technology, and autonomous driving. We will also tackle issues such as practical AI human resource development.
