Nagasaki University has signed a joint research agreement with Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation to develop a new genetic testing system for tropical infectious diseases and emerging / re-emerging infectious diseases.Established "Toshiba Medical MS Lab (Molecular Solution Laboratory)" in Nagasaki University Institute of Tropical Medicine and started joint research.

In recent years, due to the progress of globalization, tropical infectious diseases and emerging / re-emerging infectious diseases, which have been regarded as diseases of developing countries such as dengue fever and Zika fever, have become problems not only in the countries where they occur but also across national borders, only in public health. It poses a great threat to the world economy.Early diagnosis is important for controlling tropical infectious diseases, and genetic testing is expected to become widespread in the future due to its principle and high-sensitivity detection.

However, genetic testing requires three steps of "extraction," "amplification," and "detection," and the mainstream testing systems currently in use are those that automate and speed up only "amplification" and "detection."The pre-processing "extraction" remains a manual and complex procedure. For this reason, it takes extra time, and since the actual sample is handled, there is a concern about secondary infection to unskilled inspectors.

Both sides will proceed with the development of an automatic extraction system that can solve these problems for two years until 2018.Assuming support for developing countries, we aim to develop a genetic testing system that allows anyone, anywhere, to easily and safely perform "extraction," "amplification," and "detection."

Nagasaki University has achieved many achievements in research on tropical infectious diseases and emerging / re-emerging infectious diseases, and is advancing cutting-edge research. What is Toshiba Medical? In 2015, we put into practical use the "Ebola rapid diagnostic test system" that can shorten the judgment time to about 11.2 minutes, which is about 1/6 of the conventional system, and provided it to the Guinea government. We are also promoting cooperation in the development of inspection systems.
