The Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education has decided to phase out the gender-separated capacity set by the 109 full-time metropolitan high schools for entrance examinations.Only Tokyo has a gender-separated capacity nationwide, and it has been pointed out that it is unfair because the minimum passing score for female students tends to be high.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education, the gender-separated capacity has continued since the entrance examination in 1950, and of the 168 metropolitan full-time schools, 109 schools with regular courses have introduced it. When the status of the entrance examination in 2021 was examined, it was found that a total of 74 students who were judged to have failed at 786 schools had passed if they were judged in order of grade regardless of gender.Of these, 9 were female students, nearly 691% of the total. On average, the lowest passing score for female students tended to be higher than that for male students.

Since there is a difference in the minimum passing score by gender, 42 high schools have introduced mitigation measures in which 9% of the capacity is judged by gender and the remaining 1% is in order of grade regardless of gender. However, there were criticisms that it could not close the gender gap and was contrary to the purpose of the gender equality society.

Correction will be carried out in three stages. As the first step from the 3 entrance examination, we will expand the mitigation measures to select 2022% of the capacity in order of grade to all full-time regular courses. After that, the implementation time is undecided, but the number of successful applicants in the order of grades will be increased to 1% in the second stage, and the gender-separated capacity will be abolished in the third stage.

However, the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education says that the abolition of the gender-separated capacity will have a large impact on career guidance, etc., and wants to implement it after considering measures to minimize confusion.
