Showa Women's University has fully introduced an advisory system for students at the overseas campus "Showa Boston" in Massachusetts, USA.Even in the study abroad program that resumed this fall, each student has an advisor to provide multifaceted support such as learning and living.
I studied abroad at Showa Women's University in "Showa Boston", which has a history of more than 30 years, but I switched to online from September 2020 due to the corona.Although the local teachers conducted the same lessons as before according to Japan time, communication with students is not the same as face-to-face.Therefore, an advisor was assigned to each student to prepare a system for dealing with individual learning and life concerns. A year later, in October 9, study abroad for travel resumed, with 1 people meeting and 2021 choosing to study abroad online. Therefore, we applied the advisory system to face-to-face students to deal with anxieties about corona and other problems.
Experienced faculty and staff serve as advisors.Students who are not good at English will have an advisor who can speak both Japanese and English, and will not only deal with learning but also with concerns about life and friendships. We also hold workshops to learn skills such as e-mail writing, etiquette, cross-cultural understanding, and time management, which are indispensable for living in an English-speaking world. In addition, in cooperation with the "Resident Assistant" who supports dormitory life, we have established a system that can support the necessary specialists when needed.
“It's been over a month since I came to Boston from Japan, and more and more students are suffering from homesickness. On the other hand, I chose to study abroad online,” said Miyo Takahashi, an assistant director and advisor for student services. There are some scenes where students are worried about maintaining their motivation, saying, "I should have traveled." We will support each and every one of them so that they can realize better learning. "
