The "Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)" is a ranking that evaluates the contribution of a university as a research institution, and has been updated every year since its announcement in June 2003.Harvard University has been ranked number one for 6 consecutive years since the ranking was announced.Stanford University (USA) has been in second place for the fifth consecutive year since 13.
The evaluation criteria of ARWU are the conversion number of graduates who won the Nobel Prize and Fields Prize, the number of faculty members who won the two prizes, the number of highly cited scientists, "Nature" and "Science". Based on the six indicators of the number of papers published in, the number of papers recorded in "SCIE" and "SSCI", and the average expression of teachers (department performance), 2 universities in the world are announced in the ranking.
Looking at the ranking by continent, 20 of the top 16 schools are the largest in the Americas, and the remaining 4 are European universities.The top of Asia is the University of Tokyo, which ranks 21st.
文部科学省は、2013年、国立大学法人の改革プランを発表し、今後10年で世界大学ランキングトップ100に国内大学10校以上をランクインさせる目標を打ち出していますが、今回のARWUのランキングにおいて、100位以内に入った日本の大学は、東京大学（21位）、京都大学（26位）、名古屋大学（77位）、大阪大学（85位）の4校となりました。
