Students from Josai University's Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Faculty of Business Administration held a one-year collaborative class on the development of hand creams. As a cross-departmental industry-academia joint class, a student from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences commercialized a rose-scented hand cream, and a student from the Faculty of Business Administration was in charge of naming and package design.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences aims to become researchers and engineers who can apply drug discovery technology to the development of functional cosmetics.Until now, we had been planning and developing hand creams with a focus on ingredients and quality, but the problem was that we could not fully convey the goodness of the product. After consulting with the Faculty of Business Administration, which has a marketing laboratory, it was decided to completely change the content, name, and package design of the hand cream.

The hand cream is manufactured by Shalom Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Oshino Village, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture), which also handles cosmetics contract manufacturing. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences prescribes the ingredients of the hand cream, and by combining high-quality oil with rose extract inspired by the rose garden on campus, the skin feels smooth and moisturized, and the rose-based scent has a refreshing effect. It's a finish that feels like it.

On the other hand, a business administration student who is studying marketing came up with the naming and package design.During this class, the students of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences gave presentations on the features of hand creams, and based on the interviews, the students of the Faculty of Business Administration told the students and faculty of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences about the features, target audience, and naming. and the reason for the package design. As a result, "Departure Rose" was selected as the best work out of six proposals, considering a wide range of age groups.Based on this design proposal, we will produce it and distribute it at the open campus after March.

Regarding this “collaborative class”, a student from the Faculty of Business Administration said, “When thinking about package design, we tend to think about the design based on the image of the product. It was interesting to see how the users and the creators have completely different points of view.I learned well that the same product can give a completely different impression by having a broad perspective."A student from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences also commented, "By participating in a class at the Faculty of Business Administration, it was refreshing to learn about the strategic way of thinking about marketing that we normally don't have the opportunity to touch. I often recommend using it, but it was a new discovery that it might be possible to introduce a method that suits the person who uses it."Another student from the same department said, ``I was able to understand that even if you make a good product, it won't sell if you don't have an appropriate strategy. I was able to feel the need to become a person capable of 'co-creation', which Josai University advocates."
