A research group led by Specially Appointed Associate Professor Kazuya Fujiwara and Professor Hirohito Sone of Niigata University Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences has clinically demonstrated that one in 2 type 100 diabetes patients, who develop due to poor lifestyle habits, are in remission. clarified by data analysis. The results of a study that overturned the common sense that diabetes cannot be cured were published in the international academic journal "Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism."

According to Niigata University, the research group analyzed the clinical data of about 2 patients with type 4 diabetes who were being treated as outpatients at specialized diabetes facilities nationwide, held by the Diabetes Data Management Study Group. As a result, 8,000% of the patients were in remission as their blood sugar levels improved to near normal through diet therapy, exercise therapy, and bariatric surgery.

It was found that people who have been diagnosed with diabetes for a short period of time, those who have lost a lot of weight over the past year, and those who are not receiving drug treatment are more likely to go into remission. One in three remained in remission for the first year after reaching remission, but those who lost weight were more likely to remain in remission.

It has been thought that East Asians, including Japanese, are inferior to Westerners in their ability to secrete insulin and have a low remission rate. For this reason, the idea that diabetes in Japan is incurable has become established in society, but in reality, 1% of people in Europe and the United States are cured.

The research group believes that even if they are diagnosed with diabetes, if they work on weight loss early and receive appropriate treatment, the condition will go into remission, and they plan to make use of this in on-site treatment.
