On June 2020, 6, the German University of Music Freiburg connected Germany, Japan, and China via the Internet using Yamaha Corporation's player piano "Disklavier ™" with an automatic performance function, and was located in a remote location. We conducted a "remote entrance exam" to test the practical skill of playing the piano. This is the first international "remote entrance examination" to be broadcast live using "Disklavier".

Freiburg University of Music is a prestigious international music university that has been studied by students from various countries and regions and has produced many prominent musicians since its opening in 1946.Candidates from all over the world visit the entrance examination, which is held in June every year, and challenge the examination including practical skills such as instrumental music performance. However, in 6, it will be difficult for foreigners to take the test locally due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. In order to solve this problem, we introduced the "remote entrance examination" for the first time, which allows you to take a practical test of playing the piano even from a remote location by utilizing the musical instruments and technologies provided by Yamaha.

Yamaha's hybrid piano "Disklavier ™" was used for the remote entrance examination. In addition to playing as an acoustic piano, it is equipped with an automatic performance function, and Yamaha's unique high-precision digital control system enables extremely accurate reproduction of delicate keyboard touches and pedal movements. We have a track record of remote live concerts and remote lessons, but this is the first time we have used it for live remote exams.

This "Disklavier ™" was installed at Yamaha Hall in Japan, Yamaha Shanghai Office in China, and Freiburg University of Music in Germany, respectively, and connected via the Internet, with two people from Japan and one from China taking on the challenge. The delicate movements of the keyboard and pedals as played by the examinee were reproduced accurately and in near real time on a German piano far away.

Candidates who actually experienced the remote entrance exam said, "I was worried about how the online broadcast exam would be successful, but when I actually took the exam, I thought that such a style would be an effective option. In the future, I felt that if there was an online examination using "Disklavier ™" as one of the means for overseas entrance examinations and competitions, it would be possible to further globalize. " ..

Professor Christoph Zishka of the Freiburg University of Music said, "The movement of the Freiburg piano keyboard perfectly matches the video from Shanghai and Tokyo, as if it were played directly in the auditorium despite the distance of 10,000 kilometers. Everyone felt that this effort was a great success and opened up new possibilities for future exams, master classes and concerts. It's the beginning of a new era. " ..

Yamaha plans to use "Disklavier ™" in general lessons in the future, and will continue trials with music colleges and piano instructors.
