The Information Technology Center of Nagoya University has started the operation of the supercomputer "Furo".Equipped with a central processing unit (CPU) of the same type as "Tomitake" at the RIKEN Center for Computational Science in Kobe, which has become the world's number one in the calculation speed ranking, diagnostic imaging in the medical field and development of new drugs for the new coronavirus. , Used in a wide range of fields that process large amounts of data, such as typhoon mechanism analysis and automatic driving research.
According to Nagoya University, Immortality was born through a joint development between Nagoya University and Fujitsu. It was named after "Furo", which means "flow" in computer terms, and Furocho, Chikusa-ku, Nagoya City, where Nagoya University is located. The calculation capacity is 1 times per second, which is not as good as Tomitake due to the small system scale, but it is ranked 1th in the world ranking of calculation speed and 5,880th in Japan.Compared to the conventional model of Nagoya University, the calculation speed is said to be 36 to 5 times faster.
It is equipped with an AI (artificial intelligence) research support system that Tomitake does not have, a recording medium that can store data for 100 years, and equipment that displays moving images on a large screen when simulating.Spring water is used to cool the heat generated by the supercomputer in consideration of the environment.
This is the world's first service operation for a supercomputer based on Tomitake, and about 1,000 researchers in Japan and overseas, including the private sector, are registered as users.
