At the "Regional Informatization Award 2015" that contributes to regional revitalization of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, "Regional revitalization by IT fishery" of Future University-Hakodate Marine IT Lab was selected as the grand prize of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications.Utilizing a satellite-based positioning system (GPS) and a buoy with a sensor, it visualizes the distribution of marine products and the marine environment. By sharing information with fishermen, it enables appropriate resource management and technology transfer.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Future University-Hakodate Marine IT Lab is a research organization established on campus in 2012 by researchers and fishermen, including Professor Masaaki Wada, the director. The results of the activities so far have been transferred to 30 groups including local fishermen's cooperatives and 158 fishing boats. In addition to reducing the cost of conventional observation buoys to less than one-tenth, Rumoi City, Hokkaido has restored the amount of sea cucumber resources by 10 times.

In many cases, we depended on the intuition and experience of fishermen to understand the distribution of marine products and the marine environment, but by sharing information, everyone inherits the intuition and experience of veteran fishermen, and appropriate resource management is possible. It is now possible. The fishing industry in Hokkaido is suffering from the aging of fishermen, the shortage of successors, and the slump in fish prices, but it is attracting attention that the active use of IT technology has opened up new possibilities for sustainable coastal fishing.

The award ceremony will be held on March 3th at Tokyo Big Sight in Koto-ku, Tokyo, and a certificate of commendation will be handed out by Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Sanae Takaichi.
