A research group consisting of Professor Yuko Okamoto of the Waseda University Institute of Advanced Studies and Professor Rieko Osu of the Faculty of Human Sciences of Waseda University has collaborated with 6 universities * across 6 countries toward diversity and inclusion of autism spectrum disorders. U21 Autism Research Network "has started.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by poor communication and repetitive behavior. The "difficulty of social life" of ASD people is considered to be influenced by the characteristics of society and culture. However, most of the psychology and neuroscience research so far has been done in one country or a limited area, and there was a problem that it was difficult to apply the research results to ASD people in various countries. In addition, the mainstream method of current research is for researchers to independently determine their goals, and there are few opportunities to reflect the voices of the parties involved in the research.

Under these circumstances, in order to promote ASD diversity and inclusion and realize a society that respects the individuality and will of each ASD person, the voices of ASD people living in various regions will be reflected in the research, and the influence of culture and society will be reflected. Need to be investigated in detail.

Therefore, the "U21 Autism Research Network" has repeated dialogues with parties, families, and supporters living in various societies and cultures through events, etc., and based on the scientific questions raised in that, ASD in each country. Promote international comparative research through psychological experiments with the cooperation of others.By listening to the opinions of the parties involved in multiple processes, from the idea of research to the idea, interpretation, and application, research that cannot be achieved by conventional methods is started. In Japan, the project will be promoted in collaboration with Fukui University School of Medicine, Psychiatry, led by Professor Yuko Okamoto, who specializes in ASD brain imaging and psychology research, and Professor Rieko Osu, who specializes in cognitive neuroscience.
