[4] Four possibilities in the long-term range and the future of Japanese universities
We have examined the four possibilities of domestic higher education institutions targeting high school graduates (18-year-old population) in Japan, but we would like to continue to expand the scope to further the long-term range.

Chart 4 shows the further possibilities of Japanese higher education institutions in coordinate space.
◆ The Y axis is the age axis, and the axis is whether to target only high school graduates or all ages.
◆ The X-axis is the area axis, and the axis is whether it targets only the domestic market or the world.
◆ Z-axis is investment vs. outcome

Inevitably, quadrant III has the four possibilities mentioned above for targeting high school graduates in Japan.

<Quadrant I> Possibility of higher education institutions for all ages in the world
In the first quadrant, there is a possibility that higher education institutions for all ages will be established from Japan with a view to overseas. The value of this higher education institution will require the provision of pure learning value rather than a degree. If there is nothing in the world that can only be learned here, it cannot be attracted.Japanese culture / history, religion, cutting-edge science and technology not found in the world, environment, agriculture, welfare / nursing / childcare, beauty and cool Japan movies / music / manga / animation / drama / games, fashion, creative and martial arts, Japanese cuisine, tea ceremony, flower ceremony, Japanese dance, etc. can be considered.
Also, the learning method will be online using artificial intelligence, VR and simultaneous translation.Various methods will be developed for tuition fees, such as free type, paid type, and billing type for learning units.

Possibility of higher education institutions for all ages in Japan in <Quadrant II>
The second quadrant is the possibility of higher education (university / graduate school) not only for high school students but also for all ages in Japan.Although adult education and lifelong learning will be the main focus, online education that makes full use of artificial intelligence and VR will be required instead of the current concept of adult admission and correspondence education. It seems that the point is to develop a system that allows students to learn in an appropriate way anytime, anywhere when they want to learn.Educational institutions targeting adult education and lifelong learning are required to approach completely different needs.
On the other hand, there may be a concept of providing a "university place" that does not provide any outcomes. It provides value to needs such as learning itself is fun without being tied to a career, wanting to acquire a culture, wanting to learn again, wanting a place to stay, and wanting to belong to the same learning community.By forming an attractive community between people and creating an attractive place for learning, it may be possible to provide the "value of the place" as a new university.

<Quadrant IV> Possibility of higher education institutions for high school students around the world
In the fourth quadrant, there is a possibility that a higher education institution for high school students with a view to overseas will be established from Japan.
This is limited to higher education institutions that, if online, have high outcomes that allow them to earn a degree and work on a global basis. Moreover, it requires uniqueness that can only be learned in Japan and not in the world.
The other is overseas expansion.Establish a local corporation or develop a campus as a Japanese university corporation in a country where Japanese-style higher education is required.Customization to the country of entry is an important strategy. The overseas expansion of higher education institutions that can obtain unique outcomes unique to Japan that attract the world can also explore the possibility of inbound to Japan. In that case, it is meaningless unless the value of studying abroad to live and study in Japan can be provided.

So far, we have been studying "the current state of university reform and its whereabouts" five times.Based on the future predictions of the long-term range and the movement of higher education institutions globally, it is far from the current stereotypes of Japanese universities, and I think that many people have a feeling of a picture.

However, it is also a fact that it cannot be taken leniently on the premise that university reform will take a considerable period of time.At the more than 250 higher education institutions that I have provided consulting support for, some universities have envisioned a grand design based on long-term range forecasts and possibilities, and are promoting reforms in line with the medium-term plan.

The evolution of science and technology will bring about social changes beyond expectations. Therefore, the outcomes that society needs change at a rapid pace. However, what is essentially required of universities and higher education institutions is "there is nothing else" to lead a prosperous life by learning and growing by oneself, no matter what age or society changes. Isn't it to foster "outcomes"?

In order to determine the direction of survival, the mission (founding spirit, educational philosophy) is based on the current university's capital (faculty and staff, research, education, campus, facilities, equipment, finance). It is necessary to identify the direction that has been utilized, build a vision, and steadily execute the plan.

I would like to conclude this article with the hope that higher education institutions that attract the world to this country will develop.
