Why aerospace science and engineering

From this point of view, we opened a new department of robot science and engineering in 2014, but the next pillar was to train engineers who can play an active role in the field of aerospace engineering. Department of Aerospace Science and Engineering. In recent years, expectations for the aerospace engineering field have increased in response to the growing reputation for MRJ (Mitsubishi Regional Jet) and Japanese rocket technology. This field is characterized by its wide base as well as cutting-edge engineering.Taking an aircraft as an example, the number of parts used in one aircraft is 20 million, which far exceeds the XNUMX in a single car.In order to combine and integrate these, a high level of ability as an engineer is required to control a complicated system. In addition to being familiar with each part, it is also necessary to have a thinking circuit that captures the whole, such as production control and responding to social needs, so fostering them will lead to the development of the next stage of engineering education. I'm expecting it.

Currently, the automobile industry is the top earner of Japan, a manufacturing powerhouse, but with the catch-up of Asian countries, we cannot rely on it forever. It is no exaggeration to say that the aerospace industry is a field in which Japan is suitable for maintaining its global position in engineering, and is the next field after the automobile industry in terms of its cutting edge.In addition, its wide base is a great attraction for our university, which has strengths in producing mid-career core engineers.

The fact that our university is blessed with the advantage of the land is also behind this concept. In the Tokai area where our university is located, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries have been producing aircraft since before the war, and in recent years, rocket production has been added, making it the only center of space aircraft industry in Japan.By the way, the nationwide share of aircraft parts production is 50%, and the airframe is 70%. It is known not only as an MRJ but also as a manufacturing base for parts and airframe structures such as the Boeing 787 in the United States.
