Tokyokaiyo University will participate in the development of hydrogen fuel cell vessels promoted by Iwatani Corp., Kansai Electric Power Company, and Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The plan is to commercialize the artificial island Yumeshima in Konohana Ward, Osaka City, which will be the venue for the Osaka Kansai Expo scheduled for 2025, and the center of Osaka City.

According to Tokyokaiyo University, the hydrogen fuel cell ship to be developed is in the 60-100 ton class and has a capacity of about 150 people. The on-board fuel cell reacts hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity and use it as power.Compared to conventional ships, hydrogen fuel cell ships can reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and environmentally hazardous substances, and have the advantages of not feeling noise, vibration, or odors.

Iwatani Corp. will promote the potential of hydrogen energy at home and abroad by realizing commercial operation of hydrogen fuel cell vessels at the Kansai Expo in Osaka, and will make future marine transportation environmentally friendly and sustainable. I want to contribute to that.At the same time, a demonstration experiment of a hydrogen station for ships will be conducted.

Since 2008, Tokyokaiyo University has been working on the development of a fast-charging battery propulsion vessel equipped with a lithium-ion battery, and has built and put into service various types of vessels so far.Utilizing the knowledge gained from this experience in this hydrogen fuel cell ship, we will proceed with the construction of a ship suitable for commercial operation.

More than 99% of the world's trade is by ship, but the fuel for ships is heavy oil and liquefied natural gas, which emits about 8 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. This amount is said to be about 8% of the amount absorbed by tropical rainforests in South America and the Amazon, and decarbonization of ship energy has emerged as an issue for the new era.
