In August 2017, 8 students studying architecture at Showa Women's University (Setagaya-ku, Tokyo) will challenge the construction work by the rational two-by-four method, which is strong against earthquakes, in front of the student entrance of Building 14.This is the first time for a women's university to practice this kind of training, as a result of the "Let's build a building with our own hands using the framework wall construction method" project by Professor Eiko Nakayama, Department of Environmental Design, Faculty of Life Sciences.
The building is a real one-story building with XNUMX tatami mats by the two-by-four method. For female students aiming for the construction industry, it will be a valuable opportunity to experience the construction site while learning construction methods and techniques. The Japan Two-by-Four Building Association will cooperate in arranging building materials and instructors (carpenters), become interested in the two-by-four construction method, and deepen their understanding of the construction method.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has formulated the "Construction Industry Action Plan for More Women to Play an Active Role" and has begun various initiatives, but the ratio of females is extremely low, and there are not many women's universities where you can study architecture and housing studies. At Showa Women's University, graduates became qualified to take the first-class registered architect exam in 61, and many female architects have been produced.
