Hokkaido University has signed a partnership agreement with the Space Agency of the Philippine government. This is the first time that the Philippine Space Agency has signed an agreement with a university, and it was highly evaluated that Hokkaido University developed and operated the first artificial satellite in the Philippines. In the future, we will form a scrum to develop human resources who will be responsible for space development in the Philippines.

According to Hokkaido University, the agreement period is five years.During this period, Hokkaido University and the Philippine Space Agency have developed equipment necessary for the basic functions of artificial satellites called satellite buses, development of the main structure of artificial satellites, development of earth observation equipment from space, satellite operation and promotion from ground stations. In addition to promoting system development, we will promote the development of space human resources through exchanges between experts and researchers, including visiting researchers and students, promotion of joint research and development, and holding seminars and symposiums.

Hokkaido University has jointly developed the Philippines' first artificial satellite "DIWATA-1" and the second satellite "DIWATA-2" in collaboration with the Philippine government.Of these, Unit 2 is still in joint operation. The observation equipment mounted on these satellites is a fusion of the optical equipment development experience of the Graduate School of Science, Hokkaido University and the thermal structure design technology of the Graduate School of Engineering.

As a result, the establishment of observation methods using the world's highest level spectral imaging equipment, monitoring of typhoons, and the development of satellite-mounted observation equipment have progressed, which led to the establishment of the Space Agency under the Presidential Office of the Philippines in 2019. Was done. The first Secretary is Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano, Jr., an ambassador for Hokkaido University.
