Tokiwa University held the 5th Tokiwa University Institute for Social Safety Policy-sponsored public symposium "Thinking about the crisis in Ukraine now" on May 2022, 5 (Tuesday) at Tokiwa University Center Hall.About 31 students and faculty members participated in the venue, and 40 people participated in the online distribution.

 At the public symposium, under the theme of "Thinking about the crisis in Ukraine now," we understood why this war broke out in a geopolitical context and discussed the fate of the conflict.We discussed what the international community and Japan can do, including its limitations.

 The speakers were Professor Norihiro Yasui of Joban Junior College, which specializes in modern and contemporary history of Poland, Shigemi Watanabe, who specializes in international organization law and international organization law, and Kuniko Ozaki, who specializes in international law, international human rights law, and international criminal law. The moderator was Keiko Tomita, a former UN employee.

 Professor Yasui explained the background of today's conflict by looking back on its long and intricately intertwined history.Executive Director Watanabe touched on the mechanism of collective security and explained NATO's eastern expansion that triggered Russia's invasion of Ukraine.He also touched on the limits of deterrence of international organizations, including the United Nations Security Council.Professor Ozaki talked about Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the genocide from the perspective of war crimes, and explained, "Who can judge the Russian president who has left the ICC?"Students at the venue also asked questions such as "Can the war be stopped?" And "It is strange to discriminate against Russians in Japan," and deepened the discussion with the speakers.
