The superficial fascia (SMAS), which is a structure peculiar to the face and exists in the deepest part of the skin, has been suggested in previous studies to become thinner and cause sagging with aging. However, because it is located so deep in the skin, non-invasive observation is difficult and has not been fully clarified.
Therefore, Shiseido Co., Ltd. and Yamanashi University devised a method to image the water molecule signal existing in SMAS and measure the water content of SMAS by applying high-performance MRI to the face.As a result, we found that the water content of SMAS, which indicates the degree of thinning, decreased with aging, and succeeded in quantitatively clarifying the morphological change of SMAS with aging for the first time in the world.
Comparing the group with high SMAS water content and the group with low SMAS water content, even if the subjects were of the same age and BMI, the one with low SMAS water content had a significantly greater degree of sagging and the skin was firm. It was found to be decreasing. From this, it was shown that the sagging of the face is also caused by the morphological change due to the aging of SMAS.
In addition, we have developed a new beauty solution focusing on SMAS, which can be called "fascia release of the face", inspired by the treatment called "fascia release" performed at manipulative clinics.Combining a unique technique that pinches the back of the skin with both hands and pulls up the entire cheek, as if physically peeling off SMAS that has changed with aging, and a formulation devised to do this effectively. Therefore, it is said that a prominent sagging improvement effect was observed in the subjects who used it continuously for 8 weeks.
This study revealed that SMAS, which is the deepest part of the skin, is involved in sagging, and that if SMAS is stimulated to eliminate the stiffness and stiffness of the face, improvement of sagging can be expected in the future. It is expected that research and development for age-related changes will accelerate.
