The National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP) aims to understand whether young people (university undergraduates) who are responsible for science and technology in Japan are interested in science and technology and their understanding of the basic concepts of science and technology. Awareness survey was conducted.

According to the survey, the percentage of students majoring in science at university who answered "liked" science and math / math when they were in elementary, junior high, and high school was higher than the percentage who answered "disliked". rice field. On the other hand, for students whose major was non-science, the percentage of those who answered "liked" was lower than the percentage of those who answered "disliked".For example, 869 science students said they liked science in high school, and 300 said they didn't like it.Of the non-science students, 677 said they liked science in high school, and 1,251 said they didn't like it.

1,911 students (59.2%) answered that they were "interested" in science and technology information.By gender, 63.2% of men and 48.3% of women answered that they were "interested".By major, 73.1% of science students and 42.4% of non-science students answered that they were "interested".

"Specialized books and journals (including electronic versions)" were selected by most students as "reliable" sources of science and technology information. In terms of the total of "reliable" and "relatively reliable", "newspaper (including electronic version)" was the most common. On the other hand, "electronic bulletin boards and SNS" were the least reliable.

When asked about the factors that seem to be the "wall" for women's choice of science, the highest point was "It is difficult to balance life events and career development", which was answered by 2480 people. In the case of obtaining a doctoral degree, if the time of career development after acquisition overlaps with life events such as marriage, childbirth, and childcare, even if you obtain a doctoral degree, you can choose between "career or childbirth?" It is presumed that this is because they are concerned about being realistically pressed. In addition, it became clear that the image that "science is a male faculty" is deeply rooted at the time of entering university.

This survey was compiled and analyzed by receiving responses from 18 men and women (30 men and 3,231 women) nationwide who are enrolled in university undergraduate courses in Japan and are between the ages of 1,189 and 2,042.
