Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Iwatani Sangyo Co., Ltd., Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc., and Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. will operate a hydrogen fuel cell ship for passengers at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo.

Compared to conventional ships, hydrogen fuel cell ships emit less CO2 and substances of environmental concern during operation, and not only have high environmental performance, but also provide comfort during boarding, such as no noise, vibrations, or odors. Realize

The group led by Specially Appointed Professor Tsuyoshi Oide of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology has been subsidized by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) "Problem Setting Type Industrial Technology Development Cost Subsidy Project", and from 2021 Iwatani Corporation, Kansai Together with Denryoku Co., Ltd. and Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., we have been conducting joint research toward the realization of hydrogen fuel cell ships and marine stations.

As a result, it was decided that Japan's first hydrogen fuel cell ship will operate as a passenger at the 2025 Osaka/Kansai Expo, co-sponsored by research representative Iwatani Corporation.Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology is contributing to the realization of this passenger operation by cooperating in the development of a hybrid propulsion system and demonstration operations.

The hydrogen fuel cell ship will be positioned as a "moving pavilion" on the sea at the Osaka-Kansai Expo, aiming to transform the trip to the venue into a special experience and to convey the appeal of hydrogen energy to the world.30m long x 8m wide, about 120 tons. The capacity is 150 people, and the boat speed is 10 knots (approximately 20 km/h).Takumi Yamamoto, a world-famous car designer, has created a futuristic design that pursues the advancement of hydrogen.

The route is planned to connect Yumeshima, the venue for the Osaka-Kansai Expo, via the Nakanoshima Gate, an important base for the Aqua Metropolis Osaka concept, through which the Osaka-Kansai Expo will be held, via Universal City Port (UCP), which is located near one of Osaka's leading tourist spots. The operation is being consigned to Keihan Group's Osaka Suijyo Bus Co., Ltd.
