Twenty-six percent of middle and high school students who come to Kyushu University Hospital in Fukuoka City due to stuttering disorder are not attending school, and one of the reasons for this is social anxiety disorder, according to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology/Head and Neck at Kyushu University Hospital. This was discovered through a joint study by Professor Hisashi Nakagawa of the Department of Surgery, Professor Masamutsu Migami of the Faculty of Education, Fukuoka University of Education, Associate Professor Eriko Yoshida of the Faculty of Nursing and Nutrition, Nagasaki Prefectural University, and Professor Toshiro Umezaki of the Fukuoka School of Health and Medical Sciences, International University of Health and Welfare.
According to Kyushu University, of the 84 middle and high school students who came to Kyushu University Hospital complaining of rattling noises, 22 were not attending school, so a research group conducted two studies to investigate the cause.
The first study examined the social anxiety scales of middle school and high school students who did not attend school, and found that the social anxiety scores of middle school students who did not attend school were significantly higher.Next, we divided the junior high and high school students into 20 with social anxiety disorder and 20 without, and conducted a questionnaire survey related to speech. The most common responses were ``My limbs tremble when I speak.''The research group believes that this point needs attention, and recommends that preventive activities to prevent social anxiety and school refusal should be promoted starting at an even younger elementary school age.
It is said that about XNUMX% of junior high and high school students have this condition.Educational institutions and welfare and medical institutions provide support when children are in early childhood and elementary school, but when they reach junior high and high school, there are fewer organizations to support them, and the current situation is not fully understood.
