Sophia University will open an extension course "Emergency Humanitarian Aid Course" in April 2019 to acquire knowledge and skills related to emergency humanitarian aid to protect people's lives and livelihoods around the world.

 Humanitarian crises (conflicts, natural disasters, infectious diseases, etc.) that threaten people's lives are occurring all over the world. In 2018, the number of refugees and displaced persons in the world reached a record high, and natural disasters occur frequently in Japan.Fostering human resources with knowledge and skills in emergency humanitarian assistance is an urgent issue at home and abroad.

 Against this background, Sophia University will hold "emergency humanitarian assistance courses" for students and general / working people in the spring and fall. In the spring from April, you will acquire basic knowledge focusing on the scope and principles of emergency humanitarian assistance, support mechanisms and the latest trends.In the fall, lectures will be given centered on the acquisition of skills required in actual support sites, such as project management, negotiations, and safety management.

 The coordinator is Professor Taro Komatsu (Department of Education, Faculty of Comprehensive Human Sciences), who has experience working as an expert in the field of education at the Education Bureau of the UNESCO Paris Headquarters, the Bosnia Office, and the United Nations Kosovo Mission.Former United Nations WFP Asia Regional Director Kenro Shinobi and Mariko Kimura, a trainer certified by the Humanitarian Aid Quality and Accountability Improvement Network (JQAN), have been appointed as advisors.Lectures will be given by instructors who are active on the front lines of emergency humanitarian assistance such as international organizations and NGOs.
