A study by Professor Takaaki Inoue of the University of Tsukuba Medical School found that people who think things negatively and have a patient personality are more likely to have acute cognitive dysfunction (delirium) and coma for a longer period of time after cardiac surgery.Furthermore, it was revealed that having depressive symptoms affects the period of delirium and coma.

According to the University of Tsukuba, the research group conducted interviews with 1 patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery at Tsukuba University Hospital in the past year regarding personality diagnosis and depressive symptoms before surgery, and one week after surgery. The state of consciousness was observed.

As a result, the incidence of delirium was 34%, but it reached 45% in patients with a patient type D personality who thought things negatively, indicating that delirium is more likely to develop.Furthermore, it was clarified that consciousness disorders such as coma tend to be prolonged, and that the type D personality is a risk factor.

It was known that consciousness disorders such as delirium extended the length of hospital stay and increased the mortality rate, which caused many disadvantages to patients, but the relationship between personality and consciousness disorders was not clarified. This study confirms that personality influences the course of medical treatment. The research group believes that people with a Type D personality need to be treated more carefully.
