Nanzan Institute for Religious Culture, Professor Paul Swanson, Faculty of Humanities, Nanzan University, "Clear Serenity, Quiet Insight" (Volume 3, Nanzan Library of Asian Religion and Culture, Hawai'i) University Press) won the 2019 Toshihide Numata Buddhist Studies Award.

 The Toshihide Numata Buddhist Studies Award is awarded by the Institute of Buddhist Studies, University of California, Berkeley for outstanding books on Buddhist studies. It has been held every year since 2010.The selection committee described this award as "a groundbreaking and outstanding academic work" and "the highest achievement by continuing skilled research", and Professor Swanson's scholarly and clear translation made the esoteric Buddhist thought of Tendai Buddhism. It is evaluated that it has been brilliantly elucidated and comprehensive and detailed annotations have been developed over three volumes.

 The award ceremony will be held on December 2019, 12 at the University of California, Berkeley campus.A special lecture by the award-winning Professor Swanson and a symposium on the theme of the award-winning work will be held at the same time.
