Hokkaido University, Harmony Giken Co., Ltd., and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East Corporation (NTT East) Hokkaido Division will utilize "Smart Innovation Lab Hokkaido" to start joint research on AI pathological image analysis.

The lesion (tumor) tissue collected from the patient by surgery, etc. is confirmed to be benign / malignant or type (tissue type) by observing it under a microscope by a pathologist who specializes in pathological diagnosis, and the patient is based on that. The policy of what kind of treatment should be performed after surgery is decided.

In the current field of pathological diagnosis, the workload per person is increasing due to the subdivision of the area and the sophistication of information necessary for treatment. Knowledge and experience are required.

In the joint research, we will utilize the image analysis research of brain tumor pathology of Hokkaido University, the technological capabilities of Harmony Giken in the AI field, the high-speed and secure communication environment and AI analysis platform of the Smart Innovation Lab provided by NTT East. We aim to reduce the burden on pathologists by improving the accuracy of pathological image analysis and constructing an advanced pathological diagnosis support system that can be introduced into pathological diagnosis of brain tumors using the knowledge, data, and AI technology of the three parties.

After the verification, as a demonstration field, we will seek the cooperation of neurosurgery hospitals and inspection institutions to further improve the accuracy.

 * The Smart Innovation Lab is a joint demonstration environment of NTT East regarding AI / IoT with high-performance GPU servers installed.
