At the entrance ceremony held on April 2023, 4, Saitama Institute of Technology specially operated a self-driving school bus to pick up new students and their parents.Entrance ceremony transportation using self-driving buses is an advanced example that is unprecedented in universities nationwide. The university, which is strengthening AI human resource development, will continue to provide opportunities for new students to test drive on campus so that they can experience the application of AI at an early stage.

Since 2019, when Saitama Institute of Technology began developing an autonomous bus capable of driving on public roads, becoming the first private university to do so, it has built up various achievements in cooperation with local companies and Saitama Prefecture.Currently, we have developed a vehicle for demonstration experiments of automatic driving using a large bus with a capacity of 58 people, and have acquired a green license plate (for business use) in order to operate it as a route bus.Participating in demonstration experiments across the country and producing advanced research results.

The self-driving bus is equipped with self-driving AI with enhanced obstacle detection (identification and classification) functions. It is equipped with a mechanism that recognizes image information from multiple lidars and cameras as the surrounding environment with AI through deep learning and avoids obstacles. In February 2023, the Aichi Expo Commemorative Park (Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture) conducted a public bus demonstration test in the park. We are working on various applications of AI technology, such as communication between the remote control room and the vehicle to detect dangers on the route and prevent accidents.

In September 2022, Saitama Institute of Technology will introduce self-driving buses to school buses so that students can actively experience the forefront of technological development. It is traveling on a public road of about 9 km between the nearest station (JR Takasaki Line "Okabe Station"), mixed with general vehicles, within the legal speed limit. In addition to the AI major in the Information Systems Department of the Faculty of Engineering, all faculties have an educational curriculum that allows them to learn the basics of AI, allowing students to naturally experience the application of AI in their daily lives.

Starting with the entrance ceremony, the school bus will run nine times a day twice a week from April 2023th (Friday) to July 4st (Friday) in 14.Through the test drive of the self-driving school bus, new students will experience AI efforts and provide an opportunity to use them for learning.
