What is the "Honors Program" of Chiba University of Commerce?

Many people may not be familiar with the "Honors Program".Generally, it refers to a special program that further enhances the abilities of excellent students.Lectures and special classes that are different from the regular curriculum are often prepared, and the target, period, and content vary from university to university.

At the Faculty of Commerce and Economics, Chiba University of Commerce, in order to develop human resources who can play an active role in the business society from 2020, through the practice of knowledge and skills in specialized fields, logical thinking ability, problem finding / solving ability, execution ability, independence / cooperation , We are implementing the "Honors Program" for the purpose of cultivating presentation ability and expressiveness.

Inviting instructors who are active on the front lines of various fields, through 5-day short-term intensive active learning, learn and cooperate on ideas for problem solving, corporate research methods, team building, and real business. Students will present their own ideas for the tasks given by the company, and select and commend the team with the highest award and the award for excellence.

In fact, we talked to Yuto Kirita and Tenma Mori, who are currently in their second year, who participated in the Honors Program last year.

Last year, with the cooperation of My Navi Co., Ltd., Dentsu Inc., and Kinki Nippon Tourist Metropolitan Area (then: Kinki Nippon Tourist Co., Ltd.), in March, "Recovery of tourism demand in Chiba Prefecture with the power of tourism. We tackled the issue of "solving the revitalization of the local economy."The program took place in five of the two weeks, so the team contacted and discussed online during the interim days.Unfortunately, Mr. Kirita and Mr. Mori's team were not selected for the award, but they said that they were really glad to participate, looking back on how they worked on the program while devising in the midst of the corona.

Mr. Kirita personally reworked the plan and re-presented it to the instructor because he missed the award. As a result, she had to do an internship at the company, and as soon as she started to brush up the project within the company, the state of emergency by corona measures could not be realized. However, by being involved in the management of the Honors Program as a tutor this year, I am eager to learn from a different perspective than last year and make use of it next time. When she asked about the future, she said she hadn't decided on the type of business yet, but she wanted to broaden her horizons while she was still in school and create something that could have a positive impact on the world.

Mr. Mori, who was on the same team, decided to participate because he wanted to make the Honors program a turning point. "Since I entered the school, I could hardly go to school due to the influence of Corona, and I couldn't make friends. I participated in the Honors Program, made friends including Kirita-kun, and volunteered for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. By taking one action from myself, such as participating as a volunteer, many things have really changed. "Mr. Mori also said that he will participate as a tutor this year, look back on his actions a year ago from a different angle, and move toward his goal of starting a business.

The first step to connect university learning to the future

The Honors Program at Chiba University of Commerce targets first grade students.

Professor Ryohei Negishi of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics, who is in charge, said, "In recent years, the number of applicants has increased and there are many excellent students. It is also true that there are students who are highly motivated to enter university but cannot easily find their goals. If such students can meet the opportunity to take on challenges in the first grade, they will gain new awareness. I think I can set my own direction and go for learning. "

In this year's Honors Program, we will welcome major local companies to tackle issues. In addition to the previous content, a presentation in front of high school students was added to the schedule.Students who participated last year commented that if they had two presentations, the project would be improved, and at the same time, we would like to provide a place for high school students to learn about these university initiatives. Is the aim.Unfortunately, the presentation for high school students scheduled at the time of the interview was canceled this year due to the spread of coronavirus infection.I just hope that next year, the students' hot presentations will be seen face-to-face.

Last year, it was conducted only by the Faculty of Commerce and Economics, but when the target was expanded to all five faculties this year, there were more applications than the capacity, and entry sheets were submitted and selection was conducted by group work.In the future, it is expected to expand vertically beyond the grade level.

Many students are motivated to enter university, find goals, and learn, but are wondering how to set the course. On the other hand, if you get a chance, your approach to learning will change and you will surely see the path to the future. The current Honors Program at Chiba University of Commerce is aimed at first-year students, and that is the significance of making it the first step in learning.Of course, it goes without saying that the learning gained by participating is important, but it can be said that the student has taken a step toward his or her own goals from the time he was attracted to this program and decided to apply. ..
