Professor Takeshi Matsumura (58) of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokyo, who edited the medieval French dictionary for the Japan Academy Prize, which is given to researchers who have shown outstanding achievements, is an ion pump operation based on the atomic structure. Nine people were selected, including Professor Chikashi Toyoshima (63) of the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology, University of Tokyo, who elucidated the mechanism.Professors Matsumura and Teshima will also be presented with the Imperial Prize of the Japan Academy.
According to the Japanese Academy of Sciences, the recipients of the Japanese Academy of Sciences Award are Professor Akihiro Misagawa (57) of the Faculty of Letters, Tokai University, who studies the beginning of German history, and the University of Tokyo, which studies stochastic analysis and mathematical finance, other than Professors Matsumura and Toyoshima. Professor Shigeo Kusuoka (64) and Professor Keiji Maruoka (64) of the Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University, who were successful in creating the chiral interphase mobile catalyst, were selected.
Professor Takuzo Aida (61), Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, Deputy Director of the Center for Creative Biosciences, Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, which studies precision hierarchical design of innovative soft materials, Professor Takeshi Horie (75) of Kyoto University to study, Professor Tetsuo Nagano (68) of the University of Tokyo who elucidated the principle of controlling fluorescence characteristics, and Susumu Kiyono of Kobe University to study the molecular mechanism of signal transduction that controls insulin secretion. Professor (69) has also been awarded the award.
In addition, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which is given every other year to researchers involved in the conservation of biological species, was awarded to the University Museum, The University of Tokyo, which was successful in elucidating the origin and evolution of humankind by discovering fossils of Ramidas monkeys.
