The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has decided to construct the next-generation radiation facility at the Tohoku University Aobayama New Campus in Sendai City, which was proposed by the Optical Science Innovation Center, an industry-academia collaboration organization, and Tohoku University. The National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology and the Optical Science Innovation Center will develop and operate the system, aiming to start operation in 2023.
According to the Ministry of Education, the equipment to be installed at Tohoku University is assumed to be circular with a circumference of 325 to 425 meters. The maintenance cost is estimated to be about 2019 billion yen in the budget for 360, but the local government is expected to bear up to 170 billion yen.
Next-generation synchrotron radiation facilities can analyze the function and state of tiny substances by exposing them to extremely bright light. In addition to the development of new drugs and catalysts, it is said that it can be used for various purposes such as automobiles, carbon fiber, and food, and maintenance has begun overseas in the United States and Taiwan.
However, it has been pointed out that Japan is lagging behind overseas in this field, and the Optical Science Innovation Center has indicated that it wants to move the operation start time one year ahead of schedule.
The Optical Science Innovation Center is an organization established with the investment of Miyagi Prefecture, Sendai City, and the local business community, with the cooperation of Tohoku University.Applying jointly with Tohoku University, Miyagi Prefecture, Sendai City, and Tohoku Economic Federation to recruit partners for the development of next-generation radiation facilities by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Council of Experts has indicated that there is no problem with the content of the proposal.
