On November 2023, 11, Shizuoka University of Science and Technology held an experiential SIST course for high school students called ``Learn about disaster prevention through city walks: High school students' version: Road health checkups that support safe and secure living.''
Shizuoka Institute of Science and Technology is holding the ``SIST hands-on course'' for citizens in response to requests from the local community that ``they would like us to offer a course where students can actually experience things like experimentation and manufacturing.'' In this edition of ``Learning Disaster Prevention through Street Walks - High School Students Edition,'' high school students walked along the roads they use on a daily basis with experts from the ``National Council for Infrastructure Maintenance,'' which works to increase momentum for infrastructure maintenance throughout society.
Roads are not only maintained so that people and cars can move around comfortably, but they also serve a variety of functions other than transportation. In addition to regular inspections by specialized engineers, there are also things that can be noticed by ordinary citizens. The high school students checked the condition of the roads while walking, starting from Fukuroi City Hall. How did cracks and steps that you don't usually notice occur? Also, is it safe there? Isn't that so? I checked it carefully.
After completing the observation, the high school students shared their findings from the fieldwork with other members in group work and came up with countermeasures and preventive measures. In addition to roads, we also focused on sidewalks and cityscapes, and some unexpected observations and discoveries were made.
