RIKEN and the Research Organization for Information Science and Technology will start full-scale operation of the supercomputer "Tomitake," which has been under development since 2014, from March 3.Full-scale operation was scheduled to start in 9, but it has already been used for simulation of new coronavirus infection control, so it will be moved forward by one year.

According to RIKEN and others, Tomitake is a supercomputer jointly developed by RIKEN and Fujitsu. We were proceeding with development and improvement of the usage environment. As a trial operation, research on new corona infectious diseases that simulates how droplets such as sneezing and coughing and fine particles (aerosol) floating in the air spread has already achieved results such as promoting changes in lifestyle.

Tomitake's performance is equipped with about 15 central processing units (CPUs), and has reached the world's highest level in various fields such as calculation and big data acceleration functions.Computational capacity is about 9,000K 1 trillion times per second. In June and November 44, it won first place in the world supercomputer ranking "Top 2,000" for the second consecutive term.

In the future, it will be used in various fields such as medicine and physics, and 2021 applications have been submitted from all over the country to the general open call for research projects in 81.
