At the board of directors meeting held on March 2024, 3, Lutheran Gakuin Educational Corporation decided to suspend student recruitment for Lutheran Gakuin University and Graduate School (Mitaka City, Tokyo) from 21.

Lutheran Gakuin was opened in Kumamoto in 1909 as the Nihon Rocho Seminary to train pastors. It later moved its base to Nakano Ward, Tokyo, received university approval as Lutheran Gakuin University in 1964, and moved to its current location in Mitaka City, Tokyo in 1969. It was founded by the Lutheran Church, which is the origin of Protestant Christianity, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Japan, and the Lutheran Church of Japan, and has a network of educational institutions such as universities both domestically and internationally.

Lutheran Gakuin University is adjacent to International Christian University and Tokyo Theological University, and has a school building and chapel designed by architect Togo Murano on a lush campus. Characterized by small-group education and practical education based on the school's founding spirit of ``having the heart of Christ at heart,'' the university has cultivated and produced specialists in humanities, social welfare, and clinical psychology.

However, due to the recent trend of declining birthrates, the enrollment capacity will be significantly reduced starting from 2022, and as an extremely small college, we are considering maintaining the current educational system from a long-term perspective. Although we have repeatedly analyzed and investigated all possibilities for continuing university education, we have no choice but to conclude that it will be difficult to continue our business in the long term, and we will be recruiting students from 2025. It was decided to stop.

From now on, until all current students, including new students in 2024, graduate, the university will fulfill its educational mission based on its mission statement, which aims to improve each student's learning and student life, as well as initiatives for the future. Lutheran Academy will continue to issue the grades, graduation, and other certificates to graduates as usual. An information session will be held in March for students scheduled to enroll in 2024, their guardians and guarantors, and current students and their guardians and guarantors. Additionally, even after all students graduate, the Lutheran School Corporation will remain and continue its education and research at Japan Lutheran Seminary.

Please note that Kyushu Lutheran Gakuin University, located in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a separate corporation (Kyushu Lutheran Gakuin Educational Corporation) and is therefore unrelated. It is said that the student recruitment guidelines for the 2025 admission selection will be announced in early June.
