Starting in April, Tohoku University expanded its nursing care leave and leave system for faculty and staff. As the only university in Japan that has been selected as a candidate for certification as an International University of Excellence, we are working to support the balance between work and family and to further improve the work environment.

According to Tohoku University, paid nursing care leave was previously limited to five days a year in principle, and up to 5 days if there were two or more people requiring care; If there are more than 2 people, we will allow them until the 10th. Previously, employees could take unpaid nursing care leave up to three times within 10 days a year, but now they can now take it unlimited times within 2 days. In addition, employees are able to use telework and flextime, regardless of reasons such as childcare or nursing care.

As society ages, more people are living longer, and the number of people who require nursing care is also increasing. According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the number of people requiring nursing care in fiscal 2021 reached approximately 690 million people nationwide, an increase of 1.1% from the previous year. Compared to 2000, when the public long-term care insurance system started, the number has increased sharply by 2.69 times. As a result, the number of cases requiring long-term care is also increasing.

Tohoku University has been promoting systems to support the balance between work and family life, and by expanding this system, we will work to make the university even more comfortable for all faculty and staff to work in, and where they can develop their talents.
